Less than two months after deadly earthquakes rocked Nepal, survivors are starting to rebuild. Among the millions of people whose lives were changed by this disaster are an estimated 600,000
people over the age of 60. Donations from more than 4,000 AARP Foundation supporters have made it possible to rush aid to the region. Because of these generous donations, groups on the
ground have been able to provide emergency medical care, food, and shelter to survivors and are beginning the long process of reconstructing homes and lives. Through this support and
matching gift from AARP, AARP FOUNDATION DISTRIBUTED $520,000 TO ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING DIRECT RELIEF WHERE IT IS NEEDED MOST — many of them with a special focus on helping vulnerable older
adults. 100% of funds raised were distributed to the following four organizations: * HELPAGE, which is helping meet the immediate food and shelter needs of older survivors. They are also
working to ensure that the Nepalese government, the United Nations, and other NGOs include older adults and people with disabilities in their work. * CARE, which has already reached 12,000
people through distributions of blankets, tarps, clothes, and hygiene items, with a particular focus on older adults and their families. Now, they’re working with experts to assess the
long-term recovery needs of the region and plan a response. * MERCY CORPS, which has provided relief kits containing clothing, cooking utensils, hygiene products, and more to 1,000
households, with a substantial portion going to older adults and their families. They plan to distribute an additional 5,000 kits along with solar lights in the days ahead. * HABITAT FOR
HUMANITY INTERNATIONAL, which will construct 17 core houses to shelter approximately 85 people -- most of whom will be older adults. Habitat’s engineers are currently designing the core
houses and developing earthquake-resistant standards to be shared with other shelter organizations operating in Nepal. Find out more how AARP FOUNDATION PROVIDES DISASTER RELIEF and supports
