McDonald's barbecue sandwich, the McRib, will return to participating restaurants nationwide for a limited time in December. WHY IT MATTERS: The fast-food giant announced the upcoming return of its popular, seasonal sandwich Wednesday as it recovers from an E. coli outbreak tied to onions served in Quarter Pounders. * McDonald's is investing more $100 million to drive restaurant sales and speed up recovery at affected franchises, company officials said in an internal memo viewed by Axios. ZOOM IN: The FDA said last week "there does not appear to be a continued food safety concern related to this outbreak at McDonald's restaurants." * McDonald's says it has identified an alternate slivered onion supplier for approximately 900 restaurants and onions have returned to the menu. * Slivered onions are an ingredient in the McRib. WHEN IS MCDONALD'S BRINGING BACK THE MCRIB BACK? THE BIG PICTURE: The sandwich returns to McDonald's starting on Dec. 3. * The McRib has seasoned boneless pork, tangy barbecue sauce, onions and pickles on a hoagie-style bun. FLASHBACK: The McRib was not available at restaurants nationwide in 2023 and the chain called 2022 the sandwich's "farewell tour." * McDonald's has taken time off from releasing the McRib nationwide over the years. When it returned in 2020, the chain said it was the first time since 2012 that it was available at restaurants nationwide. MCRIB SAUCE JUGS TO BE SOLD ONLINE THE INTRIGUE: McDonald's said for the first time it's introducing half-gallon jugs of McRib sauce called "A Whole Lotta McRib Sauce." * The jugs will be available to purchase for $19.99 online at the special website, Wholelottamcribsauce.com, starting Monday, Nov. 25 at 10am ET, while supplies last.
