Schreiber says an injured wedge-tailed eagle that came into the clinic on March 16 is under specialised care and making a steady recovery.

to assess damage done, before sending the bird off to specialised carers.


Dr von Schreiber said X-rays and examination revealed damaged wings with significant loss of feathers, as well as a piece of lead shot, typically found in shotguns, inside in one its wings.


"A lot of the main front feathers were tattered, almost shredded," Dr von Schreiber said.


He said it was possible the bird might have been shot. However, they were unable to tell for sure since the wound had already started healing up when they assessed it.


The eagle had been found near Candelo on the side of the road unable to fly, in a weakened and malnourished state.


Dr von Schreiber said it would take around 6-9 months before the eagle can be released back to the wild - nine if the eagle was to regrow its feathers, or six if they get implanted.
