CHANGES TO THE TWO-CHILD BENEFIT CAP COULD BRING IN EXTRA MONEY FOR FAMILIES 15:50, 01 Jun 2025 Universal Credit claimants could benefit from a huge £586 boost every month under proposed

changes. The Government is considering axing the two-child benefit cap, which some say is one key factor behind high child poverty levels. Currently, parents can only claim Child Tax Credit

and Universal Credit for their first two children, if they were born after April 2017. It means that any families with three or more children born after April 2017 cannot claim means-tested

benefits for their additional children. But if the cap were to be scrapped, it could boost Universal Credit payment every month for households with more than two children. The child element

of Universal Credit is currently worth £292.81 per child every month for children born after April 2017. Article continues below For a family of four, lifting the cap could bring in an extra

£586 a month under current levels. READ MORE: ROBERT JENRICK SAYS 'GIVE PRISON OFFICERS LETHAL WEAPONS TO TACKLE ISLAMIST EXTREMISTS' According to the Resolution Foundation, the

cap would increase the number of children in poverty to 4.8 million by the next election in 2029-30. Torsten Bell, the foundation's former chief executive and now a Labour Treasury

minister, said axing the cap would lift 470,000 children out of poverty. The controversial policy was first introduced by the Conservatives. Figures from the Department of Work and Pensions

indicate that about 1.6 million children live in a household affected by the cap. Article continues below Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has hinted that the Government is looking at

scrapping the two-child benefit cap. But she warned the move would 'cost a lot of money'. _Don't miss the biggest and breaking stories by signing up to the BirminghamLive
