A stand off on a hotel roof lasted almost nine hours and resulted in a busy Newcastle road being cordoned off. Police attended Osborne Road in Jesmond at 11.30pm yesterday to carry out an

arrest. However, once on scene it is reported that a man climbed onto a roof of the Cairn Hotel, where he remained until 8.25am this morning. A police cordon was put in place between Queens

Road and Reid Park Road for the duration of the incident. Photos from the scene show a topless man standing on what appears to be the roof of a bay window or entrance to the Cairn Hotel. Eye

witnesses say the man was throwing bricks into the road below. A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 11.30pm yesterday, officers attended an address to carry out an arrest of a

man. The man then climbed onto the balcony of a building and began to throw pieces of mortar to the ground below. "No-one was injured in the incident and following negotiations with

officers the man came down from the balcony at 8.25am. He was arrested by officers and is currently in police custody. A section of Osborne Road which was closed to traffic while officers

negotiated with the man remains closed to allow for removal of debris." The road has since reopened and the cordon has been lifted.
