BY 2030 THE NUMBER OF NORTH TYNESIDE RESIDENTS AGED 75+ IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE BY 30% 17:05, 29 May 2025 North Tyneside is bidding to become a World Health Organisation ‘age friendly’ area
as the number of older people is set to “grow significantly" by 2030. According to North Tyneside Council statistics, from 2020 to 2030 the number of people aged 65-74 is set to
increase by 16.2% and number of those aged 75 and over is set to expand by 30.8%. This equates to a jump of 23,815 65-74-year-olds in 2020 to 27,547 in five years' time. In the same
time period, those in the 75+ age bracket will increase from 18,879 to 24,739. On the wider national trend, the report states: “There are already more older people living in our communities
than ever before and this will only grow. In 20 years’ time 1 in 4 of us will be over 65.” The council’s report continues: “These changes pose significant challenges to both health and
social care. However, an ageing population also creates many opportunities and the wealth of life experience which an older population brings is something to be celebrated. We want to
harness these opportunities and unlock the potential of our ageing population.” The local authority's work to help bolster its proposed application to the World Health Organisation
(WHO) to be officially designated as ‘age friendly’ includes reviewing how it can focus on hearing the experiences of marginalised pensioners. It can take up to five years to be officially
registered as ‘age friendly’ with steps including developing action plans, identifying potential gaps in services and continually measuring progress. Councillors on the council’s health and
wellbeing board have been recommended to agree to continue with the WHO application. The committee will convene on Thursday, June 5 to consider the report. Article continues below JOIN OUR
