NEWCASTLE UNITED FANS' EMOTIONAL REACTION FOLLOWING THE CARABAO CUP FINAL WIN AGAINST LIVERPOOL HAS STUCK WITH GARY NEVILLE AFTER THE MAGPIES ENDED THE CLUB'S TROPHY DROUGHT 17:00,
20 May 2025 Gary Neville has recalled the emotional moment he saw Geordies in tears at Wembley after Newcastle United ended the club's long wait for silverware. Newcastle won a first
major domestic trophy in seven decades following a 2-1 win against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final a couple of months ago. It marked the first time since 2013 that a side other than
Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea or Manchester United had lifted the cup. Crystal Palace followed suit in the FA Cup final after defeating Manchester City under the arch last week as
Oliver Glasner's team won their first ever trophy. Although Simon Jordan felt Crystal Palace's cup triumph was 'the bigger story', after the former Eagles owner took aim
at the 'universal mainstream love-in for Newcastle', that evening at Wembley left its mark on Neville. "The performance by Newcastle was incredible but, most of all, it was
the Newcastle fans and what it meant to them," he told Sky Sports. "Seeing them at the end of the game just up behind me...the screaming, the veins popping out of their necks, the
tears. It was everything you want to see. "I'm sure Crystal Palace fans were the same on Saturday. Newcastle had not won a trophy for 70 years domestically so it was an incredible
day." Article continues below Neville also picked Eddie Howe's masterplan as his 'outstanding' coaching display of the campaign in Monday Night Football's end of
season awards after the Manchester United legend 'never thought any other result would happen other than Liverpool winning'. Jamie Carragher ended up going for Andoni Iraola's
set-up in injury-hit Bournemouth's 4-1 win against Newcastle at St James' Park, but the former Liverpool defender was also full of praise for the Magpies boss as he looked back on
the club's Wembley triumph. "Something he said after the game was brilliant," he added. "He said they had been preparing for that game as soon as they got to the final.
"They played Liverpool a few weeks beforehand and almost did the opposite of everything they were going to do in the game. [Alexander] Isak didn't play. There was probably nothing
wrong with him. Just leave him out. Article continues below "I thought, 'Wow'. He's still got important league games but from Monday to Friday, we will work on the
Liverpool game. The set-piece they scored from Dan Burn they said they had been working on for weeks. I thought it was really interesting how Eddie Howe went about it."
