THE RETAILER IS REPORTEDLY SET TO SHUT SHOPS IN SOUTH TYNESIDE, NORTHUMBERLAND AND COUNTY DURHAM IN THE LATEST BLOW TO THE HIGH STREET 12:30, 10 Feb 2025 A British fashion retailer is

reportedly planning to shut several of its stores, with the North East set to bear the brunt of the closures. Select, which currently operates 105 stores on high streets across the UK, is

said to be closing 12 of its branches imminently, four of which are in the North East region. According to documents seen by The Sun, the fashion chain's shops in South Shields and

Ashington will be closing their doors in the coming weeks, as well as the Peterlee and Hartlepool branches in County Durham. Other Select sites that are said to be earmarked for closure

elsewhere include the Scunthorpe, Thornaby, Hull Hessle, Hull St Stephens, Chippenham, Wellingborough and Merthyr Tydfil branches, The Express reports. The clothing chain previously fell

into administration in 2008 and then again in 2019, leading to subsequent buy-outs. The news follows a string of recent closures for Select, with the retailer's sites in Wolverhampton

and Kidderminster already having shut their doors at the start of the year. The fashion chain also confirmed several closures in 2024 including in Ipswich, Kent, and Cwmbran, as well as the

Erith Riverside Shopping Centre in London. According to filings on Companies House, Select Fashion entered a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) last summer, which allows businesses to

continue trading by negotiating its debts, such as cutting rental costs with landlords. KEEP UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS AND TOP STORIES FROM THE NORTH EAST WITH OUR FREE

NEWSLETTER Select also operates stores in the Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland, in Washington and in Cramlington, with the future of these sites so far unconfirmed but not believed to

be affected by the closures. However, the news comes as the latest blow to the UK high street, with other chains having announced more shop closures so far in 2025. Last month, it was

reported that fellow fashion retailer Quiz is facing the closure of all its UK stores. Quiz, which operates 60 stores and dozens more concessions including in the New Look store in

Gateshead's Metrocentre, is said to be on the brink of calling in administrators after recording losses of nearly £7 million last year. The chain, which has stores in major cities

across the UK including Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester, employs around 1,500 staff members whose future has been left uncertain. The fashion retailer has been a staple of the UK high

street for more than three decades after opening its first branch in Glasgow in 1993. And earlier this month, Homebase also confirmed that it will be closing 33 more of its stores in

February, including North East sites. The retailer was bought out of administration in November after being sold to The Range owner CDS in a rescue deal which secured 70 stores and up to

1,600 jobs, but the future of its remaining 49 shops and 2,000 workers was left up in the air. In its latest round of closures, the high street DIY retailer has confirmed that all affected

workers will be given least two weeks' notice of their effective date of redundancy in the form of a letter sent to their homes, while all wages and benefits will be paid for their

period of employment. Stores in Alnwick and Gateshead have been confirmed as among those set to close their doors this month. These branches were two of five North East Homebase sites

confirmed to be among the 74 branches put up for sale in November. Also on the list were stores in Tweed Sawmills in Berwick, Watling Road in Bishop Auckland, and Tyne Valley Retail Park in

Hexham, all of which were also confirmed earlier to be closing their doors for good. Article continues below JOIN OUR WHATSAPP COMMUNITIES ChronicleLive is now on WhatsApp and we want you to
