BRITISH HOLIDAYMAKERS HAVE BEEN SEEN QUEUING FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR TO BEAT OFF GERMAN RIVALS IN THE RACE FOR SUNBEDS. IS THIS WHAT CHURCHILL MEANT WHEN HE SAID "WE'LL FIGHT THEM ON THE BEACHES"? 15:04, 29 May 2025Updated 15:14, 29 May 2025 British holidaymakers have come up with a patriotic way of beating German counterparts in the latest round of sunbed wars — by queuing for more than an hour to secure the best spot. The bizarre queue of Brits armed with towels and sun cream has become a regular sight for guests at a hotel in the Canary Islands as the battle over loungers reignited. Tourists staying at the Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort in Las Palmas, Spain, have been baffled by the fight-them-on-the beaches mentality of some holidaymakers desperate to get a bed. And video captured by one hotel guest shows the Brits forming an orderly queue before the pool area had even opened. Isabelle Hanssen, whose balcony overlooks the pool, says the line is usually made up of Brits, but a few German tourists have also been known to hand around early to reserve a bed. She also revealed that the queues start from as early as 8am despite the pool not opening until 9:30am, with lines of around 10 people forming at difference entrances. Isabelle, from the Netherlands, also posted the footage online with the caption: "Lining up 30 minutes before the pool opens all for that one sunbed, priorities I guess." Some social media users branded the practice "pathetic and ridiculous" and "beyond embarrassing." Another wrote: "This is my worst nightmare" and a third agreed, saying: "That's not a holiday for me." German holidaymakers have been the butt of jokes from Brits abroad for racing to put their towels down to secure the prime poolside spot for decades. And the rival camps have have long locked horns over who is to blame for the annual havoc as tourists descend on holiday hotspots in the summer months. But things have heated up in recent years after the German press blasted Brits' behaviour as "embarrassing" and said our tactics had taken on “grotesque features”. In 2023, staff at one hotel in the Costa Del Sol were so fed up with the morning madness they introduced a parking ticket style system - with towels left on beds unattended removed after a time limit. Last summer, a viral video showed sunseekers making a dash for their favourite spots around a pool in Spain. And earlier this month, two British women were caught on camera furiously rowing over a sunbed at a three-star Lanzarote hotel. Footage showed one disgruntled holidaymaker, who appears to have a Scottish accent and is wearing a pink cover up, accusing the other Brit of taking a spot which members of her group had been occupying 'all week'.
