EGGHEADS SAY THE HUMAN BODY CAN ONLY SAFELY CONSUME ONE LARGE MEASURE OF VINO EVERY 12 MONTHS AS IT IS SO 'TOXIC' AND IF BOOZE WAS INVENTED TODAY IT WOULD FAIL FOOD SAFETY
STANDARDS 15:41, 30 May 2025Updated 15:42, 30 May 2025 Boffs are warning boozers they are plonkers if they drink more than one glass of wine a year. Panicked eggheads say the human body can
only safely consume one large measure of vino every 12 months as it is so “toxic”. A leading drug researcher at Imperial College London added if alcohol was invented today it would fail
modern food safety standards due to how harmful it is to our bodies. Professor David Nutt warned the “maximal recommended amount” of alcohol any individual should consume in a year, based on
the toxicology, is a single large glass of wine per year. The 74-year-old added: “I can accept that 40,000 years of alcohol use is precedence but if we invented it today we wouldn’t have
that precedence. “So what would we do? Well, what we would do is you would put your alcohol through food safety testing and it would fail. Article continues below “It would fail because the
maximal recommended amount of alcohol any individual should consume in a year, based on the toxicology, is a large glass of wine per year. “That’s why they had to exempt it because you
couldn’t put it through normal testing so that tells you how relatively harmful alcohol is.” Prof Nutt, from Bristol, is an experienced neuropsychopharmacologist and chair of the discipline
at Imperial College London. He has previously served on the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs under Gordon Brown’s Government. Article continues below His warning comes after Labour
announced plans to make slapping alcohol warning labels on booze mandatory for the drinks industry.
