MEGANN GIBSON IS SET TO BE SENTENCED IN AUGUST AFTER IT EMERGED SHE PURSUED AN ILLICIT RELATIONSHIP WITH AN ANONYMOUS INMATE AND THEN SENT OVER 900 TEXTS TO HIS MOTHER 11:15, 02 Jun 2025 A
prison officer who pursued an inappropriate relationship with an inmate now faces jail time herself. Megann Gibson, 26, engaged in sexual communications with a lag while she was working at
West Yorkshire prison Wealstun. The guard then bombarded the criminal’s mum with over 900 in a bid to stay together with her son, a court heard. The shamed officer also allegedly allowed the
anonymous inmate into restricted areas of the Category C resettlement prison, while visiting his home address. Gibson, hailing from Leeds, West Yorkshire, will be sentenced in August after
she admitted misconduct in a public office and possession of cannabis, the Mail reports. Now Gibson herself may even be facing jail, with a judge at Leeds Crown Court telling her last week:
“You may well be serving a prison sentence.” Gibson, who lives with her mother and sister, is undergoing assessment for mental health conditions with the plea hearing a previous relationship
could have sparked post-traumatic stress. Article continues below She was released on unconditional bail but told her offence was a “serious matter”. Gibson’s case is far from unique; the
Ministry of Justice revealed last month that in the span between 2023 and 2024, 19 prison staff members faced charges for such misbehaviour – marking a decade high in penitentiary passions
On May 16 this year, former “rising star” of the Prison Service, Kerri Pegg, was sentenced to nine years behind bars for engaging in an illicit affair with a notorious drug-dealing gang
leader at HMP Kirkham, Lancashire. The 42-year-old had swiftly ascended from graduate to governor within six years before everything unwound. Meanwhile, Tracy Boateng, a 27-year-old prison
officer, narrowly escaped imprisonment after being caught in a romantic entanglement with convicted heroin dealer Vincent Ojo, who saw her as his "fairytale ending". Boateng was
apprehended when her body-worn camera revealed footage of her taking a selfie with Ojo, playfully instructing him to say "cheese" while making a peace sign as he stuck out his
tongue. Article continues below The mother of a three-month-old daughter from Dagenham, Essex, appeared in Snaresbrook Crown Court in late May to be sentenced for a single count of
misconduct in a public office. Judge Caroline English said that it was only the fact Boateng was the sole carer for such a young child that had saved her from prison. Judge English said:
"I cannot emphasise enough just how serious this offence is. As a senior prison officer you held a position of authority and trust and were expected to discharge the duties by upholding
prison rules. You knowingly breached those conditions with a prisoner who was under your supervision."
