EXCLUSIVE: WHILE THOUSANDS WOKE UP TO 'VIOLENT SHAKING' ACROSS GREECE AND TURKEY AS A HUGE EARTHQUAKE HIT, ONE MAN WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SLEEP SOUNDLY WITH THE AID OF A FEW PINTS

10:57, 03 Jun 2025 While thousands of tourists and locals recounted the moment huge tremors woke them up in the early hours as an earthquake swept through Turkey and Greece – one Brit

managed to avoid the carnage thanks to a few nighttime pints. The Daily Star's Steve Hughes and his family were caught up in the earthquake while staying at a resort in Akbuk near

Bodrum, Turkey. Steve said: "My wife woke up in a panic after feeling the hotel room literally shaking. She went out onto our balcony and half the guests were also out on theirs. There

was lots of confusion. "Then everyone's phones started giving out earthquake alerts. It was pretty scary." But Steve's terror was saved until the morning thanks to one

lucky drink. Or ten... "Luckily I slept through the whole thing and so did the kids," Steve continued. He had polished off ten pints the night before to indulge in the holiday

spirit. Steve didn't even realise what had taken place in the early hours until he woke up. He said: "Everyone was talking about it at breakfast this morning. Article continues

below "It's not something many of us has ever experienced before." Pints aside, several locals shared reports of their hotel rooms shaking during the quake. The Turkish

disaster control authority reported the seismic activity, which started at 2.17am in the Mediterranean and was felt in nearby regions, including the Greek island of Rhodes. The

European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also recorded a 6.2 magnitude quake hitting Rhodes this morning. Holidaymakers took to social media to describe hotels "violently

swaying and shaking" during the tremors. Marmaris' governor, Idris Akbiyik, initially reported no serious damage but has since confirmed that 69 people were injured after leaping

from heights in panic, and a 14-year-old girl sadly passed away. Brits on their holidays have been posting about their rude awakening by the quake on social media. One person shared on X:

"Woke us up - the hotel room shook violently while we were on holiday in Rhodes. Never felt an earthquake before, so it was a little concerning." Another concerned holidaymaker

said: "My best friend is out in Rhodes and not long been woken up by a 6+ magnitude earthquake, Is there anymore chance of any other earthquake or repercussions occurring ? Thank

you." A mum living in Armutalan, Turkey, around 21 kilometres from the epicentre, said the earthquake had a particularly dramatic impact on her home. She said: "I was asleep in bed

with my daughter, the whole bed started shaking the lights were flashing on and off, glass smashed." The mum added that plaster was torn from the wall, and she saw "big

cracks" as she was left "petrified". She added the earthquake "went on for a very long time and was very strong". Article continues below _FOR THE LATEST BREAKING
