The government has decided to bring the Gujarat Professional Technical Educational Colleges or Institutions Bill in the upcoming budget session. In what could be a big boost to professional

technical education institutes, the state government is all set to open doors of such institutes for students from other states. The state government has decided to bring the Gujarat

Professional Technical Educational Colleges or Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fees) (Amendment) Bill in the upcoming budget session of the assembly in this regard.

“The number of approved seats in professional courses in the state has increased significantly in last 10 years, but many seats have remained vacant in some disciplines. To fill the vacant

seats as well as to improve competitiveness of our students, it is necessary to provide admission to students from other states,” the proposed bill says. As per the bill, students from other

states would be eligible for admission to supernumerary seats of professional courses in government, in aided and unaided colleges and institutions. The bill notes that a number of other

states, including Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, have been allowing students from other states since long. “So far, students from Gujarat were going to

other states to pursue higher education. We want to reverse the trend by opening our institutes for students from other states,” said officials. Students from other states would be admitted

subject to limits set from time to time. However, colleges and institutions, which have achieved the level of Centre of Excellence, would be exempt from the bill. It says that the government

may direct to conduct separate common entrance test and to prepare separate merit list for such students. The government also plans to bring the Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya (Amendment) Bill

in the budget session. The bill would allow the university to have various campuses or off campus constituent colleges instead of being limited to a single campus. Another bill to be tabled

in the assembly in the upcoming budget session is about substituting the words ‘Bhavnagar University’ with the words ‘Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University’ in The Bhavnagar

University Act (Amendment) Bill. One more bill relates to substituting the words ‘The Vir Narmad South Gujarat University’ with the words ‘Veer Narmad South Gujarat University’. The

government also plans to bring The Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Management Bill in the budget session for setting up an institute in Maninagar. The government will

also bring The Gujarat Public Trusts (Repeal) Bill 2012.
