Parliamentary Secretary for Land Management Padi Richo has been appointed election agent for UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential election. In a letter to the Assistant
Returning Officer of Arunachal Pradesh on July 9, Mukherjee informed that Richo has been appointed as his authorized representative for dealing with matters relating to the Presidential
elections, official sources said here today. State Education Minister Bosiram Siram has been authorized as Mukerjee’s additional authorized representative for polling day, they said. Taking
business delegations in her tours has always been hailed by Rashtrapati Bhavan as a "landmark" initiative of the President to promote economic diplomacy. The President insisted
that the foreign visits were not pleasure tours, but serious business. "They are not pleasure tours or ceremonial in nature, but are planned seriously to (promote bilateral ties)",
she said. The President steered clear of questions as to which have been the most difficult decisions for her at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. "I do not want to fuel any controversy",
she said. 77-year-old Patil described Pranab Mukherjee as a "deserving candidate" of the UPA in the Presidential polls. "Mukherjee is a deserving candidate. It is really a
good decision to field him", Patil, who has been the country's first woman President, said. The outgoing President was evasive on questions whether she planned to write an
autobiography. "I have not yet decided. I will first take some rest", said Patil, who plans to settle down in Pune. Patil said that only today she has received the report from
Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil on farming issues. The Committee of governors was constituted following a workshop organised by her on the issue of addressing farm sector woes. The President,
who has been underlining the need for "out-of-the-box" solutions to enhance productivity in rainfed and dryland farming (RFDF) areas, said that she would take up with the
government the report of the Shivraj Patil Committee. The Committee constituted in November last year was asked to study and recommend measures for enhancing productivity, profitability,
sustainability and competitiveness of rainfed areas with special reference to farmer industry partnership.
