The Central Railway (CR) have started cleaning heaps of garbage - now that it isn't raining continuously - that are found next to stations. Repair work being carried out on railway
tracks during a mega block Now mega blocks are not just about maintaining tracks and overhead electric cables on suburban system. The Central Railway (CR) have started cleaning heaps of
garbage - now that it isn't raining continuously - that are found next to stations. On their list are stations falling on the Harbour line namely Govandi, Mankhurd in the initial phase.
The CR authorities have setup teams involving officers and workers who are removing garbage, silt and muck that have been dumped along the rail tracks. This work was carried out on July 1
at Chembur and Govandi; However, the muck was also cleaned on last Sunday. The officials claim that the muck and garbage is not just found next to the station premises but even between two
stations. This during heavy rains chokes up the drains and culverts passing by rail tracks. Normally, the cleaning of garbage and muck is done upto May 31. However this year the railways are
going pro-active and removing muck even during monsoon when it isn't raining. Until now the CR have collected over 82,000 cubic metre of muck and silt of which majority is garbage.
Before the rains the CR authorities had removed 80,000 cubic metre of muck. Usually during mega blocks the rail authorities carry out repair work of tracks, overhead cables and wires,
signalling equipment and other paraphernalia. "We have specifically asked our engineering department to make plans of removing muck and silt as well during mega blocks carried out on
Sundays," said SK Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Central Railway. On July 1, the CR carried out mega block between Kurla and Vashi on the Harbour line from 11.10 am to 4.10
pm. They will replicate this exercise in other stations of Wadala, Kurla on Harbour line. Later it will be extended to the Main lines as well.
