Nirupam claimed that he had been put under house arrest by the police since Saturday morning, and was not allowed to step out of his Andheri house. The Versova police on Saturday afternoon

detained Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam at Versova police station for staging a protest outside his residence against the government's demonetization decision, during Prime

Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the city. Nirupam claimed that he had been put under house arrest by the police since Saturday morning, and was not allowed to step out of his Andheri

house. "On Friday, we had informed the police that we are going to stage a silent protest, but on Saturday morning, I was told by police that we cannot stage a protest and that I cannot

step out of my house," said Nirupam. According to the police, Nirupam was detained after he, along with his party workers, started raising slogans and staging a protest outside his

residence. He along with some Congress workers were then taken to the Versova Police station and detained. They were charged under the Bombay Police Act. Nirupam's supporters allegedly

burnt tyres after he was detained. On being allowed to leave, Nirupam said he had been prevented from raising questions against demonetisation. He also announced that his party was planning

a protest on December 26. "It is a completely baseless allegation from Sanjay Nirupam that he was kept under house arrest. We had deployed around 15 policemen outside his society so

that BJP men do not create any tension there. If he would have been under house arrest, then how could he go to Malwani to meet a party worker and then to Versova for a dharna? Nirupam was

detained and was later let off," said a senior Mumbai Police officer. "Few people had sought permission from police for a demonstration at BKC. We categorically told them that no

demonstration would be allowed at either PM's venue or at the route which would be used by the PM. They were told to carry out dharna at Azad Maidan," said the officer.
