Ravi Pattanshetty stands 47th while Mrunmayi Joshi ranks 98th in the all-India merit list. A city boy and girl were among the toppers in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam merit
list released on Friday. Ravi Pattanshetty, who is posted at Bangalore in Corporate Law Services, topped in the city by ranking 47th and Mrunmayi Joshi ranked 98th in all-India merit list.
Twenty-seven-year-old Pattanshetty was in Bangalore when the results were announced while his family was in Belgaum. When contacted Pattanshetty said, “I missed the merit list with just one
mark in my first attempt last year. Though, I was into the services, I wanted to be in the administrative field, so I attempted the examination for the second time.” Pattanshetty is the only
person from his family to be in civil services. His father Subhash was an engineer in Bharat Forge while mother Shashikala is a housewife. He has a married sister. Pattanshetty said, “I did
not expect to be in the first 50, but I am very happy. The success is the combination of hard work along with a bit of luck. Only studies do not help, you need critical thinking to crack
the examination.” Pattanshetty is an electronics and telecommunication engineer from Modern College of Engineering, Pune. Joshi had started the preparation for the civil services from her
standard X. “I always wanted to join the services. I could not crack the exam in the first attempt. This time, I concentrated only on studies without thinking of the rank or merit list,”
said Joshi. Daughter of district judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi, Mrunmayi took political science and history as her core subjects. “I am an arts graduate from Fergusson College. We can bring
in change in society through administrative reforms and for that a strong background of political studies and history is needed.” “I am confident of getting selected for IAS but if not then
I would prefer Indian Foreign Services,” Joshi said. Joshi took coaching from Chanakya Mandal, Dnyan Prabodhini and Unique Academy while Ravi took coaching from Dnyan Prabodhini.
