notice a major redesign of the print edition, complemented by an increased focus on digital-first news.
For the first time, digital and print production will be brought into the same newsroom process.
It will allow The Examiner’s journalists to publish breaking news immediately at www.examiner.com.au and prepare exclusive local content for the next day’s print edition.
The print redesign includes a new font and size and more spacing between the type, allowing for easier reading and a better flow between stories.
Readers will see an expanded Weekender magazine in Saturday’s edition as well as all the usual content such as Sunday magazine pages, regional coverage, TV guide and Domain.
It is part of Fairfax Media’s digital-first plan to provide its audience with the best news experience across all platforms.
Designed to deliver journalism to digital and print audiences more effectively and efficiently, it is already producing almost 100 newspapers and their websites in Victoria, Queensland,
southern NSW and South Australia.
Fairfax Tasmania group managing editor Mark Baker said the changes heralded another stage in the evolution of the state’s oldest newspaper to being truly multi-media.
“The Examiner has always been at the forefront of innovation since its founders smuggled a printing press into the state disguised as brewery equipment,” Baker said.
“It was among the first newspapers to replace typewriters with computers and was the first regional newspaper to embrace the digital age with an award-winning smartphone app.”
Baker said this next step was part of evolving a traditional print business to be truly digital-first.
“Our journalists and photographers are being equipped with the latest technology, which will allow them to report directly from community.
“Ultimately the changes will see a greater presence of local news and sport in the newspaper, our website and social media pages.”
Advertising staff were also being provided with the technology to work remotely while offering innovative sales solutions to clients.
Baker said under the leadership of editor Simon Tennant, The Examiner’s core mission to serve and build the Northern Tasmanian community would remain the focus.
“The commitment of The Examiner’s staff to advocating for its region and telling the stories that are important to its audience remains unchanged,” he said.
