Tasmanian-born Richmond chief executive said support from the AFL would be vital for chief executive Robert Auld.
“At the end of the day you can have good people developing programs and talent pathways, but you also need money to make that happen,’’ Gale said.
“The AFL has probably under-invested in Tasmania in comparison to the northern markets.
“The ability of the State League here to produce talent has been strong, but that has dropped off.
“The state needs to continue to develop talent and that should be the most immediate priority.”
Gale, speaking in Burnie ahead of a BIG talk, praised the AFL content in Tasmania thanks to Hawthorn and North Melbourne, saying ‘’the more games the better”.
This, he believed, was another way to improve talent numbers, as exposure to the elite level was the best way to inspire young players.
But for someone who was passionate about wearing The Map in his playing days, there was something missing.
“Tasmania should have a legitimate aspiration to have a team of its own, but what that looks like, I don’t know.”
Gale played 244 games for the Tigers from 1990-2001.
