REGARDING the council’s decision to scrap the average rates, it is totally unfair. A lot of people are asset rich, by no fault of their own. When the property market had a boom some  property values doubled, if not tripled, they would have brought their houses when prices where low and lived in them for many years. Some people would probably get a  concession on their rates but it would not help them out too much. Some areas of Launceston, the rates are expensive  and haven’t even got footpaths, street lighting or an up to standard water supply and they are paying triple the rates to areas with this standard infrastructure. Time for the council to be a bit more fairer. If some of the other councils can do it, why not Launceston?
