Considering it costs about $35,000 to raise and train a guide dog, state community fundraising coordinator Kristy Wright said ongoing community support was vital.

"As we expand our program to include more companion and therapy dogs, as well as guide dogs, it's important that we continue to raise funds in the Tasmanian community, so we can place more

life changing dogs with Tasmanians who need them," she said.

"A fundraising ball is something new for us, so we're hoping the community - particularly the Launceston community - will get behind this event so it's something we can offer every year."

There are currently 21 working guide dogs in Tasmania, helping to provide their handlers with independence, safety, confidence and companionship.

A trained guide dog himself, Archie proved to have too much personality and enthusiasm for life to continue his career as a working guide dog.

Guide Dogs Tasmania community fundraising coordinator Kristy Wright, with 11-week-old guide dog in training Victor. Instead, he lives at Peppers Silo Hotel helping to promote the

organisation and its cause.

Recently Archie met with 11-week-old Victor, who is currently undertaking his puppy training.

When Victor is about two years old, he will move onto more advanced training with a guide dog handler.

Ms Wright said guide dogs usually began working with their clients when they were about two years of age and usually retired when they are about 10.

"It is a long process, but a very worthy cause for them," she said.

Archie's ball will be a a cocktail style event held on Saturday, June 15, featuring delicious food, entertainment, dancing, silent auctions and of course, cocktails.

Special guests on the night will include Jo Palmer and musician Matthew Garwood.

Tickets are available for $120, with funds raised contributing to the training of more guide, therapy and companion dogs for Tasmanians living with disability.

Tickets can be purchased here.
