Small business owners have been left out of pocket after part of a main road in Huddersfield was closed due to roadworks. Water engineers closed a section of Westbourne Road in Marsh over
the weekend and by 2pm today (Monday, June 2) the road remained closed near the Co-op. The road is a main route to and from the M62 and Huddersfield town centre. Diversions are in place.
Local businesses said they did not know when the road is due to reopen. Akram Mohammedpour, who runs Pino's takeaway in Westbourne Road, said the road had been closed 'three of
four days' and it had hit takings due to reduced traffic. "It has got to be sorted quickly as business is already down. We are struggling." Local resident Corinne said side
roads were being used as diversions which had added to the inconvenience. Adding: "You want to see progress (on the roadworks) and you want to know when they are going to end. People
will be happier when they know a timescale." Corinne said the main road through Marsh was 'lovely' and it was a nice place to live. Robert Firth, owner of Cake Castle in
Westbourne Road, said: "I was hoping to come in on Monday and everything be back to normal. A few trucks have been coming up and have had to turn around and the bus this morning who
didn't get the memo." Robert said the workers appeared to have filled in two holes and 'disappeared'. He added: "We had a few customers in this morning who had to go
the long way round. It has been slow going." Kirklees Council was contacted but declined to comment since it said it was a Yorkshire Water incident. A Yorkshire Water spokesperson
said: "We attended a number of small bursts at Westbourne Road, Marsh, Huddersfield, HD1, on Saturday evening (31 May 2025) when a small number of properties experienced a temporary
loss of pressure or supply. "These were repaired and supply restored the same evening. Excavations are in the process of being reinstated and the road should reopen on Wednesday. A
fully signed diversion is in place. "Further down the road there are 2-way lights in operation whilst we repair consequential damage to the carriageway. "We appreciate that traffic
management is inconvenient and would like to thank local residents and road users for their patience whilst we carry out these important reinstatements." _GET ALL THE LATEST AND
