The former Fifty Shades of Grey actress has been touted to play the role by the first movie’s director Luca Guadagnino, with whom she has worked on Suspiria and A Bigger Splash. And in a new
interview with Armie Hammer - who played Oliver - for Variety, she confirmed that the film-maker has addressed it with her. So will it actually happen? “I literally get asked about [a
sequel] all the time,” Hammer said. “I do too,” Johnson agreed. “But the most real thing about it is… it’s not real at all! It’s just an idea. Like, ‘we should have dinner again sometime.’
“But it would be fun.” When Hammer expressed concern that a sequel could fail to live up to the “magic” of the original, Johnson said she worried that fans would blame her if that happened.
“The first one felt like such a special, unique thing,” Hammer recalled. “To try and recreate that magic, if it doesn’t work… people are going to be p****d. ‘You guys ruined it!’” Johnson
chimed in: “No, it’ll be on me! “It’ll be like, ‘why did you put her in it? She ruined it, she ruined everything.’” One thing that is definitely happening is a sequel to the original book.
Writer André Aciman has confirmed that he is working on a new tome that will return to the story of Elio and Oliver. “I would actually love a sequel to Call Me By Your Name. In fact I am
writing one,” he tweeted. The film won huge plaudits last year, including an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and actor Timothée Chalamet. James Ivory’s screenplay won.
