VAUXHALL MOKKA Price: from £16,995 WE rather like the look of the tasty new Mokka that will arrive in the showrooms in November. The coffee-named crossover, which will be keenly priced from

just under £17,000, is slightly smaller than most of its mainstream rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai and the Kia Sportage but larger than the Juke and the Mini Countryman. As with most of

its rivals, only the top versions get four-wheel drive. The line-up comprises two petrol engines: a six-speed 1.4-litre turbo producing 140bhp and a five-speed 1.6 petrol producing 115bhp.

There’s also a sixspeed 1.7-litre turbo-diesel producing 130bhp. The Mokka’s emissions start from as low as 124g/km. All versions with a manual box will get useful stop-start technology. All

Mokkas come with a decent level of standard equipment including air conditioning and a digital radio. HONDA CRV Price: from £23,500 (est) ■ MORE than fi ve million CRVs have been sold

worldwide since the Japanese firm introduced it in 1995. This fourth-generation version will arrive in showrooms in October and like the current car will continue to be built at Honda’s

plant in Swindon. For the first time the CRV will be offered with either two or four-wheel drive rather than switchable 4WD as before. Buyers can choose from two engines: a 2.0-litre petrol

or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, both developed from the current car. Under-bonnet improvements have meant that emissions have been significantly improved for both units. Although it’s slightly

shorter and lower than the current CRV, the new version actually boasts increased interior room. There’s up 1,648 litres of luggage space to accommodate two mountain bikes or four sets of

golf clubs. A handy function can fold the rear seats fl at in one easy move. PEUGEOT 3008 Price: from £17,195 IT may not be the newest crossover on the block but we still think Peugeot’s

3008 is one of the best. Good looks allied to a smart interior and a very helpful Range Rover-style split tailgate make it supremely practical family transport. There’s also a split-level

boot to keep smaller items from prying eyes. As well as a comprehensive engine range, the entire 3008 line-up is front-wheel drive. The exception is the new flagship Hybrid4, which is the

world’s first diesel-hybrid. It uses a diesel engine to drive the front wheels and battery power for those at the back (the same technology is also used in the Peugeot 508). It might take

some effort to match the claimed 74.4mpg but there’s no questioning the 99g/km emissions – astonishingly low for a crossover. MAZDA CX5 Price: from £21,395 ■ YOU could be forgiven if you

don’t remember Mazda’s CX7 crossover but you certainly won’t be able to ignore the talents of the new CX5. The stylish crossover is the first Mazda to feature the Japanese firm’s new

Skyactiv technology. This uses a combination of features such as light weight and stop-start technology to add up to the best economy and emissions of any car in its class against its

non-hybrid rivals. It doesn’t do much harm either that it’s a good-looking set of wheels. The 2.2-litre turbo-diesel with 150bhp is the best seller in the range and with 119g/km emissions

and 61.4mpg fuel economy it’s not difficult to see why. A smart interior and some clever touches, such as quick release levers in the boot for the back seats, give the Mazda a strong

practical case against the competition. RANGE ROVER EVOQUE ed4 Price: from £28,950 DOES the Evoque really need any introduction? The baby Range Rover has transformed Land Rover’s image, and

profits, around the world. Not only that but the Evoque has also immediately dominated the premium cross-over class and this entry-level ed4 will only underline that. Despite Land Rover’s

strong association with 4x4s, the ed4 drives only the front wheels but it’s 75kg (almost 12 stone) lighter and boasts 56.5mpg and 129g/km emissions to make it more desirable to big-buying

company car fleets. Available in both three and five-door forms, the ed4 isn’t available in the Dynamic trim level or with an automatic box but unless you really need the four-wheel drive,

it’s hard to see a reason for choosing any other version of the Evoque. SKODA YETI Price: from £14,945 ■ THE Yeti might not look like some of the more conventional crossovers but there’s no

doubt that it should be included in this company. Although four-wheel drive versions of the Yeti are available, a large portion of the rest of the range is two-wheel drive across both

turbo-diesel and petrol ranges, the latter starting from as low as a 1.2-litre turbo. The 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels (in 110 and 140bhp forms) are the pick of the bunch, offering up to

61.4mpg. Added to the comprehensive engine line-up is a very practical and roomy interior offering up to 1,760 litres of boot space. Some of its younger rivals might be more refined on the

road but few can match the Yeti’s all-round skills. Keenly priced and vastly underrated, it’s one of our favourite motors on the road and one of the best cars in the Skoda’s current line-up.
