Optimists find it easier to regulate the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, by their adrenal gland, according to researchers at Concordia University in Montreal. In a six-year

study, 135 adults, who identified themselves as optimists or pessimists, had their hormone levels measured five times a day. Researcher Joelle Jobin said: “On days [of] higher than average

stress, the pessimists’ stress response is much elevated, and they have trouble bringing their cortisol levels back down. Optimists were protected in these circumstances.”
