Microsoft Edge is losing users by the day. The minimalist web browser, which ships as the default on Windows 10 and deeply incorporates voice assistant Cortana into its features, is

struggling to retain users. And Microsoft's other web browser, Internet Explorer, has not faired much better. According to California-based analytics vendor Net Applications, the number

of users choosing Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer has more than halved in the last two years. Net Applications' data shows the number of PC users favouring Microsoft Edge and

Internet Explorer has plummeted from 62 per cent to just 27 per cent between March 2015 and February 2017. As usage of Microsoft's web browsers has dropped, Google has enjoyed

remarkable success. According to the data, the user share of Google Chrome – across all operating systems – has more than doubled in the last two years. Chrome user numbers have leapt from

25 per cent in March 2015 to 59.5 per cent last month. Thanks to this growth, Google Chrome has comfortably supplanted Internet Explorer to become the world's most-used browser.

Apple's Safari, which ships as the default on both iOS and macOS, has also seen a decline in the same period. In March 2015, an estimated 69 per cent of all macOS device owners used

Safari access the internet. The latest update is aimed to defending Chrome users on macOS against unwanted software or targeted malware. Those running Google Chrome on macOS will now begin

to see the bold red warning pages as they browse to dangerous sites, or try to download potentially damaging files. Google hopes the feature will reduce macOS-specific malware and unwanted

software plaguing Apple laptop and desktop users. The US search company will also target software that attempts to change the users' start page, home page, default search engine, and

more, without the user's explicit permission. Another recent change now ensures that only extensions hosted within the Chrome Web Store will be allowed to edit settings. The security

changes will go live on March 31st for macOS users.
