“I was told by people who knew him well and had been appointed to senior positions by him." Mr Trump reportedly made the offer when visited Theresa May at her Buckinghamshire retreat
Chequers where he urged her to be “tough” and “brutal” in Brexit talks with Brussels. Mr Paterson told the Daily Telegraph: “Clearly there was a deal to be struck in the summer - it was
handed on a plate and now that opportunity seems to have been squandered." READ MORE: Brexit live Mrs May will see Mr Trump this weekend at the G20 summit of world leaders in Argentina
but there is no plan for them to hold one-to-one talks. The Tory leader was dealt a major blow on Tuesday after Donald Trump sad her Brexit deal with the EU may harm trade with the US. He
urged the Prime Minister to "do something" about the agreement to ensure the UK can trade with the US more freely. Mr Trump told reporters in Washington: "Sounds like a great
deal for the EU. "I think we have to take a look at, seriously, whether or not the UK is allowed to trade. "Because, you know, right now, if you look at the deal, they may not be
able to trade with us. And that wouldn't be a good thing. "I don't think they meant that. He added: "I don't think that the Prime Minister meant that. And,
hopefully, she'll be able to do something about that. "But, right now, as the deal stands she may not, they may not, be able to trade with the US. And, I don't think they want
that at all. "That would be a very big negative for the deal." But a spokeswoman for Mrs May fired back saying the UK has been laying the groundwork for an ambitious trade deal
with the US for some time. The spokeswoman added: “The political declaration we have agreed with the EU is very clear we will have an independent trade policy so that the UK can sign trade
deals with countries around the world - including with the US. "We have already been laying the groundwork for an ambitious agreement with the US through our joint working groups, which
have met five times so far."
