Kate Middleton and Prince William married in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are now the proud parents of Prince George, Princess

Charlotte and Prince Louis. Throughout their relationship, they have often decided against following royal protocol as they are seen as modernisers within an institution adapting to the

demands of an ever-changing world.  With the two being university sweethearts, it has been suggested that Kate and William’s story made Prince Harry’s romance with Meghan Markle more likely.

However, when Prince William proposed to Kate in 2010, he made one promise in particular that has ultimately set the Duchess of Cambridge aside from the likes of Princess Diana and Sarah

Ferguson – who married into royalty before her.  Amazon Prime documentary “Kate Middleton: Working Class to Windsor” reveals that Kate was able to marry into royalty without leaving her

family behind.  Speaking on the 2018 documentary, Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl said: “Once you married into the Royal Family, you became a Windsor and that was that.  “Well, it was different

when Kate and William got married. “When William asked Kate to marry him, he made it very clear that she wouldn’t have to leave her family behind her once she married into his family.  “He

promised her that they’d always stay a part of the family and they have done. “Whether it’s joining the Queen at Ascot or being on an important barge within the Queen’s fleet at the Diamond

Jubilee celebrations, they’ve been there.” The documentary also revealed that, prior to marrying William, Kate received "lessons on how to be a royal wife".  Royal commentator

Ashley Pearson added: “From the beginning, Kate Middleton had a great deal of support from the Royal Family which was really instructed by the Queen. “[This was] to make sure that she knew

as much as she could possibly know and what to do in every situation – bearing in mind, of course, that she didn’t grow up in this world.  “There were things like learning how to get out of

a carriage without exposing your modesty and learning how to bend down to get flowers from a young girl without exposing your modesty.  “Things that you would never think you’d have to learn

but, of course, a woman in her position would certainly need to know. “There were all kinds of small details [and] little bits of etiquette – how to sit, who to curtsy to, who not to curtsy

to, what fork to use and whatever else they felt she needed to know. “She was actually given lessons on how to be a royal wife.” Before meeting William, Kate grew up in Chapel Row – a

village near Newbury, Berkshire.
