Mr Kinnock staged the intervention on BBC Newsnight last night. The Labour MP for Aberavon proposes a softer Common Market 2.0 exit strategy. The lawmaker insisted he had cross party support

for the amendment. When quizzed by the show’s presenter Emily Maitlis, about whether the amendment “wasn’t a runner anymore”, he replied: “I’m happy to have a discussion around the customs

union and the single market. “The Ken Clarke proposal and ours are in essence singing from the same hymn sheet - let's work together. “Let’s isolate and face down the minority of a

minority that’s been running the show for far too long. “Why not have the discussion and not brush it under the carpet. READ MORE: THERESA MAY'S DEAL 'ON A KNIFE EDGE' SAYS MP

- 'HANDFUL OF VOTES' “We can’t pretend our future relationship with the EU is not going to be discussed tomorrow.” The Common Market 2.0 is aimed at bringing back a similar

economic relationship with the European Economic Community in the 70s and 80s. The UK would enjoy the benefits of the common market but there would be no direct involvement from the European

Court of Justice. Labour and Conservative MPs are said to back the proposal, which is often referred to as the Norway Plus model. However, its critics say this would still include freedom

of movement. They also argue that it would lead to the UK making significant contributions to the EU budget and following EU regulations. Ken Clarke’s proposal, which is also backed across

Labour and Conservatives, argues for a permanent customs union with the EU. The plan says that any EU withdrawal agreement “must include, as a minimum, a commitment to negotiate a permanent

and comprehensive UK-wide customs union with the EU”.
