Mr Marr was quizzing the Shadow Chancellor on his support for Rebecca Long-Bailey in the Labour Party leadership race when the first comment was made. The second comment came when Mr Marr
asked Mr McDonnell if he planned to stay in a senior role in the new Shadow Cabinet. Twitter users did not hold back when mocking the Labour MP. Mr Marr said: "It is the worst kept
secret in British politics that you are a fan of Rebecca Long-Bailey, you talked about her a lot and yet recently you have gone a bit quiet. "Is that because you fear that the charge of
being the continuity Corbyn, McDonnell candidate is actually damaging her?" Mr McDonnell replied: "I am trying to ease myself into the role of elder statesman, it is quite

interview, Twitter users attacked the Shadow Chancellor for his "elder statesman" comment. A fifth said: "See Andrew Marr has his favourite guest on again this morning, John
McDonnell. Had to turn the TV off." Another tweeted: "John McDonnell is such a delusional idiot, describing himself - twice - on the Andrew Marr Show as an ‘elder statesman’ lol.
Winston Churchill, he definitely ain’t." Another Twitter user said: "If John McDonnell feels the need to self-proclaim himself as an ‘elder statesman’, he’s probably not an elder
statesman."
