Could there be a more potent demonstration of how our asylum vetting process has become little more than a global farce than the case of people trafficker Ahmed Ebid, who was jailed last
week for 25 years? Born in Egypt, this vile chancer was tempted into a life of serious crime and actually served time in Italy for six years after being caught trying to smuggle a tonne of
cannabis into the country. Disturbingly, upon making the illegal crossing into the UK this conviction did not stop him being instantly placed on the benefits bandwagon. The next time you
hear the bleeding heart lawyers and campaigners say asylum-seekers have no immediate access to welfare payments in this country, remember this story concerning evil 42 year-old Ebid. How was
his criminal past not discovered? What are the laughable supposed “checks” we run on these people? Why were we saddled with the bill of paying for this lawless gangster? Having arrived in
the country claiming he was a penniless Egyptian fisherman, after two weeks he found himself living in a flat in Isleworth, a fashionable part of West London, along with his wife and their
child. Not only were we paying for their accommodation, they also instantly qualified for benefits. Safely on the state payroll, Ebid’s attention turned to possible criminal activities – and
within just days of arriving on UK soil, “Captain Ahmed” as he was known on social media, had organised his first people-smuggling sortie. Over six months, he organised seven crossings from
Libya to Europe involving 3,800 people who paid an average of around £3,200. If they were slow to pay, they faced beatings from his gang members, and if they were caught with mobile phones
they were threatened with being thrown into the sea. Two people were found dead on one of the crossings he arranged. He was a despicable lowlife who saw human beings as a commodity, but in
the process was the key instigator in seven crossings that would have brought in around £12.3 million. And not only did we – disgracefully – wave him in without any form of halt or
hindrance, we gave him free bed and board and ensured he had cash in his pocket! While it’s only fair to point out this all took place when the Conservatives were in power and the utterly
hopeless Home Office was as useful as a pack-a-Mac in a Tsunami, it is also deeply embarrassing for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his laughable “Get tough” message to migrants earlier
this month. He wanted to come over as Charles Bronson. In truth it was more Charlotte Brontë. The hand-wringing Left loathe this story. It doesn’t fit with their unhinged and misguided
narrative that every asylum seeker is fleeing war, rape, persecution and, or torture. While obviously some are, this tale of the thuggish Egyptian people smuggler highlights much of the
reality everyone must wake up to.
