“John Major is saying now that the withdrawal from the single market would be once again actually repeating a historic mistake. “That’s why I think that in the next House of Commons, the key
decision MPs will make is the future relationship of our country with Europe and that’s the issue that they need to be examined on.” Ridge pushed the politician on whether he was backing
voters to support candidates that were not Tories. She said: “You’ve written before saying that in this election the future relationship between the UK and Europe is more important than
party labels. “So just to be clear, as a Conservative, are you saying that voters should support people who are against leaving the single market even if they’re not Conservatives?” Mr
Dorrell swerved the question and said voters would judge individual candidates at the election too. He said: “I am what I always have been, a one-nation Conservative but everyone knows that
in elections, electors look at the candidates as well as at the party. “And it seems to me important that when they look at the candidates they should ask of themselves whether this
candidate… will approach the meaningful vote, which the Prime Minister rightly has promised at the end of the negotiating process, whether they’ll approach that vote with an open mind in
order to secure Britain’s best interests.”
