He would have been delighted to be sharing this accolade with the most important member of our family, who, of course, is Paddington.

"But I think he would have felt the honour was more for Paddington than himself."

The train arrived at Platform 1 at London Paddington - near to where the adventurous bear first appears in the 2014 feature film - during the special event.

Fortnum's illustrations and computer-generated images of Paddington from the recent films are printed on the doors of the train.

The unveiling took place three days before what would have been Bond's 92nd birthday and was attended by friends and family including his wife, Sue.

Ms Jankel and Mrs Bond were presented with exclusive memorial coins to mark the occasion.

GWR Managing director Mark Hopwood said: "We're delighted that Michael's name was put forward.

"I'm so pleased to have this opportunity to pay tribute and for GWR to play its part in creating what I hope will be a lasting legacy to a true hero, Michael Bond."

Bond created the loveable character after buying a teddy bear from a store near Paddington station on Christmas Eve 1956.

Having often passed through the station when travelling to London from his home town of Reading, the author thought it would provide the perfect name for his new creation.

The first book was published on October 13 1958, and 35 million Paddington books have now been sold worldwide.
