During the discussion, President Donald Trump may reveal his “measured” response to the launch. A US official told CNN he may consider sending troops to the Korean Peninsula in a show of
strength or impose additional sanctions. South Korea said the missile launched from an airfield in North Korea’s city of Kusong, flew for approximately 37 minutes before crashing into
Japanese waters. Initially responding to the launch, President Trump personally attacked the communist state’s despot leader, asking if he had “anything better to do with his life”. He
tweeted: "North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? “Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much
longer. “Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!” The launch, on the eve of the US' Independence Day, took place days before leaders
from the Group of 20 nations were due to discuss steps to rein in North Korea's weapons program. Pyongyang's official news agency said the launch successfully tested stage
separation, warhead re-entry and late-stage control. In a report, Kim said the United States would "have to be displeased" by the missile test on its national holiday. John
Schilling, a US based missile expert and contributor to the North Korea monitoring project 38 North, said the launch was both earlier and "far more successful than expected." He
warned it would now probably only be a year or two before a North Korean ICBM achieved "minimal operational capability".
