Countryfile presenter John Craven arrived in Rotherfield this evening, a village in Sussex. He explained that 100 years ago it was celebrating the end of the First World War - and the
village itself has a special connection with the event. He explained: “93 young men from this parish never returned. “Farm labourers, groom and carters, and stable boys - their untimely
deaths ripped a huge hole in this tightly knit rural community.” But, he continued, the young men who joined the service in 1918 are now being remembered in a brand new way. John explained:
“Now their names are being carved in stone to mark the centenary of the war that took their lives. “And in just seven weeks the village raised almost £7,000 to build this grave.” John later
went on to look at some other memorials, including silent soldiers - wooden cut-outs of people who fought in the war. John called the silhouettes “very moving” whilst talking to David
Peacock, the artist behind the memorials. And fans of the show were deeply moved by the display on the show. One wrote on Twitter: “That was beautiful the image of the soldier waving bye
#ArmisticeDay #countryfile @BBCCountryfile.” Another remembered the war by writing: “#Countryfile #WeWillRememberThem Farm labourers gave their lives for us #youngfarmers 19 from one village
#LestWeForget.” A third chimed in about their home village, writing: “So proud of my home village, being featured on BBC Countryfile. “And yes, my war horse painting, currently in my shop
window was there too!! ‘As seen on TV’! Well done Rotherfield, I love you!” These memorials ensure the names of those gone but not forgotten will be remembered for years to come. Earlier in
the series Sean Fletcher spoke about how one of the show’s settings got him emotional. Arriving on a Welsh hilltop, he explained that it was the venue for one of the first dates he had with
his now wife. He said: “Now, Laurence you don’t know this: but there is a special place for me just round that cliff. “It was one of my first dates with my wife - we had a little bbq, glass
of wine. Yeah, special moment.” _COUNTRYFILE AIRS SUNDAY AT 7PM ON BBC ONE._
