Kevin Webster’s (played by Michael Le Vell) seven-year-old son Jack (Kyran Bowes) will develop the blood infection after cutting his knee while playing a game of football. In the first

instance, Jack will visit the hospital to have the bruise looked at by a health care professional. However, when he becomes increasingly ill he will be rushed to Weatherfield General and

sedated to support his organs. Coronation Street producers revealed Kevin will face “a difficult decision that no parent should have to make” as he will be forced to decide whether Jack

should be amputated to save his life. ITV bosses are working with Sepsis Trust UK to execute this story “accurately and sensitively”. Dr Ron Daniels BEM, chief executive, said: “Stories like

Jack’s are all too familiar and remind us of the devastating human cost of sepsis. “Individuals and families have their lives torn apart by the condition – more people than breast, bowel,

prostate cancer and road accidents combined. “Better awareness could save thousands of lives each year.” He went on to tell Radio Times: “We have been working very closely with Coronation

Street both with the writers and the technical team over the last few months to ensure the subject matter is dealt with both accurately and sensitively. “It’s incredible that Coronation

Street is raising the profile of a condition which affects so many people, and yet until now has been so poorly recognised,” he added. “It’s about shared responsibility and, together, we aim

to empower both families and health professionals to ‘think sepsis’ and to change the way sepsis is handled in the UK.” More than 40,000 people are killed by sepsis each year and long term

complications due to delayed diagnosis cost the UK economy a staggering £15.6 billion annually, according to the UK Sepsis Trust. Sepsis is a rare condition and if not treated quickly can

lead to multiple organ failure and death. The warning signs include looking mottled, bluish or pale, feeling abnormally cold to touch, having a rash that does not fade when you press it,

breathing very fast and having a fit or convulsion. This summer, Coronation Street will also revisit Bethany Platt’s (Lucy Fallon) grooming storyline when a newcomer named Kayla Westbrook

(Mollie Windward) is revealed to be her rapist’s daughter. Kayla is set on getting revenge on Bethany after her father former policeman Neil Clifton (Ben Cartwright) was sent to prison for

her rape. The two girls will get into it when Bethany turn’s up at Kayla’s house looking for her ex-boyfriend Craig Tinker (Colson Smith). But when Kayla drops a photo of her father being

presented with an award for bravery, Bethany is horrified to discover who she is. Kayla will then tie Bethany up and keep her captive, but will she kill her to get her own back? _CORONATION
