Manchester United have moved for Wan-Bissaka, making the 21-year-old their second arrival of the transfer window following the deal for Daniel James earlier this month. The former Crystal

Palace defender is buzzing to get started at Old Trafford, saying: “It’s an unbelievable feeling and an honour to call myself a Manchester United player and something I know that only a

small number of players have the privilege to say. “I can’t wait to get going and integrated into the squad. “I will have a short break now after the European Championships but I’m looking

forward to starting training with the manager and my new team-mates on the pre-season tour.” United fans have reacted giddily to the announcement, hailing their club’s capture of such a

promising asset. But history suggests they may need to be patient before seeing the best of the England Under-21s star. United have made him their first English signing since Luke Shaw in

2015. And, though Shaw won the club’s player of the year award last season, he is yet to hit the heights expected of him. He had his issues with Louis van Gaal upon signing, with the

Dutchman viewing the defender to be out of shape. With a bit of tough love, Van Gaal coaxed the best from Shaw - before injury then hampered his development. It took him two years to win

round Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, finally becoming the club’s first-choice left-back last season. And though Shaw was good, he’s still not a patch on United greats such as Patrice Evra

and Denis Irwin. The expectancy is that he’ll be even better next season with better players around him. United can only hope. Prior to Shaw, the club had moved for Phil Jones and Chris

Smalling towards the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge. But neither has gone on to become the players the Scot predicted they would one day be. Both have done well to survive at

United for this long. Their erratic form is why Solskjaer wants reinforcements at centre-back this summer. English players and United used to chime in unison. But they don’t any more. And

that’s why fans should be patient when it comes to Wan-Bissaka and not expect the world from him right away.
