MUMBAI: As per the recent monsoon report by the public health department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), there has been a huge decrease in the number of H1N1 in the city. A
senior official said the monsoon preparedness by the civic body’s and environmental factors have played a major role in decreasing the number. A senior health official said the city has
witnessed 97 per cent drop in cases of H1N1 compared to last year. Not only the H1N1 but also the number of cases related to dengue, malaria, gastroenteritis and leptospirosis have also
slightly decreased. “Till November 30, the cases have decreased to 25 in 2018 from 995 in 2017 and no deaths have been reported this year compared to 18 deaths which were reported in 2017.
It has also learnt the cases are decreased every alternate year as in 2016 only three cases were reported across public and private hospitals of the city compared to 3029 cases and 52 deaths
reported in the year 2015,” added official. Dr Padmaja Keskar, executive health officer of Mumbai said the reasons could be related to proper vaccination and awareness among the citizens.
Factors such as public health machinery, environmental factors or passive immunity which has helped in reducing the number. “We do not know for sure if its passive immunity because there it
will require certain tests to be sure. But there were hardly any cases of swine flu this year. Also, the trend has been the same throughout the state,” said Dr Keskar.
