Send us your views on harvest progress/prospects: [email protected] Settled weather across much of the UK has allowed growers to make good progress today (August 9). Latest reports
show that many are happy with results so far, with quality and yields often being better than expected. Peter Wombwell in Essex was pleased that wheat yielded better than anticipated at 8.75
– 9.4t/ha. Xi19 and Malacca had good protein levels of 13.5-14.3%, good Hagbergs of 269 – 350, and bushel weights where they should be. Simon Dann in Norfolk was surprised with 48ha of
Labrador and Expert oilseed rape yielding better than expected at 4t/ha. He was pleased the crop was of good quality and said wheat was also looking well. Winter wheat yielded much better
than last year for Worcestershire farmer Peter Fairs. At an average of 9.4t/ha, he was pleased with Istabraq and Claire bushel weights of 80kg/hl and 76kg/hl respectively. An average oilseed
rape yield of around 3.5t/ha was also better than last year for Mr Fairs. Andrew Kerr in Essex said things were going quite well and was satisfied with his first wheat. Einstein yields
varied considerably from 7.6t/ha to 10.5t/ha. The quality was better than last year with bushel weights of 76-80kg/hl, but he was disappointed with second wheat Access. Mr Kerr was pleased
with Lioness oilseed rape yielding better than the long-term average at 3.9t/ha. See FWi’s Harvest Highlights section for the regional reports in full and more from around the country,
