23 August 2000 800,000 to save old vegetable types _BY FWI STAFF_ AN 800,000 lottery grant is going to save old vegetable varieties, reports _The Independent_. The money is being given to Vegetable Kingdom visitor centre at Coventry-based organic gardening charity the Henry Doubleday Research Association. Lottery cash will pay for a proper home for the seed collection of 800 varieties developed by Victorian horticulturists but hardly grown now. As they are not on the National Seed List, varieties such as Lady Godiva pumpkin and Rats Tail radish are now rarely seen beyond enthusiasts gardens. * The Independent 23/08/2000 page 1
