Prices started in April and May at lower levels than 1999 and movement was very slow. In early June the season picked up and the increased demand continued into July as prices remained steady. They gained slightly at the end of the season and the overall average price for the 2000 early crop season was 131/t, compared with 75/t in 1999. This increased confidence in the market, the expectation of lighter maincrop yields and an expected 4% reduction in the planted area have provided a strong starting position for the maincrop trading period. Harvest is continuing at a steady pace, typical for August, with prices remaining stable. Bold samples remain in short supply with set skin samples fetching up to 260/t for 100% set. Semi-set samples are worth 170-200/t. General bulk packing material is mainly 110-180/t for Desiree, and 170/t for the first Edward. Bag Piper are mainly 140-160/t with other varieties 115-140/t. Best reds and whites are worth 160/t. Salad varieties are from 120-200/t depending on size, with most Peer 160/t. Charlotte are fetching up to 300/t for best. The BPC weekly GB ex farm average price has stayed firm this week at 130.13/t, 43p lower on last week.
