10 August 2000 MAFF favours TB vaccine for cattle _BY FWI STAFF_ THE government has released details of progress that has been made in developing a vaccine to protect cattle from bovine tuberculosis. According to a report released by the ministry of agriculture, the major focus of the governments programme involves developing a vaccine for cattle. However, the option of developing a vaccine for badgers is being retained. Junior farm Minister Baroness Hayman said finding a vaccine was regarded as high priority in MAFFs long-term research strategy. I am pleased to publish this important report which describes the scientific progress made in this area in the last year, she said. Potential candidate vaccines have been produced and these are being evaluated for their effectiveness. A MAFF spokeswoman said a vaccine was still some way off yet but the government wanted to show what work had been done. The issue of vaccine development is expected to be a key area of discussion at a conference in Cambridge next week. The Third International conference on Mycobaterium bovis will be held from Aug 14-16.
