7 January 2000 Pig farmers urged to go organic _By FWi staff_ PIG farmers suffering from the crisis in the sector should consider turning towards organic production, claim the backers of a new industry initiative. The initiative aims to meet consumer demand for domestically produced organic pigmeat by encouraging farmers to abandon chemical farming. It plans to persuade a significant percentage of UK pig producers to convert to organic production within the next five years. The plan will be launched by British Quality Pork, one the UKs biggest pig businesses, and Eastbrook Farm Organic Meats on Monday (January 10). Eastbrook Farm, which rears organic pigs, was founded by Helen Browning, chairperson of the Soil Association which campaigns for organic farming. Demand for organic food in the UK is so high that an estimated 70% of all organic produce has to be imported.
