A two-time former Parliamentary candidate has been chosen to lead the Liberal Democrat group on Redcar and Cleveland Council. Councillor Jemma Joy said local Lib Dems would “continue to

fight for local people and liberal values across the borough”. The councillor, who represents the Hutton ward, in Guisborough, has twice stood in Parliamentary elections in Middlesbrough

South and East Cleveland in 2019 and 2024. She has also chaired the council’s climate and environment scrutiny committee and lives in Guisborough with her husband and children. Cllr Joy

replaces Councillor Carole Morgan, a former teacher and ex-borough mayor who represents the Ormesby ward, and had served as leader for the past two years. Cllr Joy said she was “honoured”

and thanked fellow Lib Dem councillors for placing their trust in her. A spokesperson for Redcar and Cleveland Liberal Democrats said: “The group is confident she will lead with integrity,

passion and a clear vision for the future.” The group consists of nine local councillors attached to the Lib Dems. This is the time of year when local political appointments are decided in

council AGMs, such as committee chairmanships, as well as, separately, ceremonial mayors. FOR THE LATEST REDCAR AND CLEVELAND NEWS DIRECT TO YOUR INBOX, GO HERE TO SIGN UP TO OUR FREE
