The incident happened on Darlington's Grange Road on Saturday, May 31, and Durham Constabulary is appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Part of Grange Road, near Manjaro’s
restaurant, was cordoned off for several hours and a man in his 50s was arrested.
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called shortly before midnight on Saturday (May 31) to reports of an assault on Grange Road, in Darlington.
"A man is believed to have been pushed into the road where he was then struck by a passing vehicle. He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with serious injuries where he remains today
in a stable condition.
"A man in his fifties was arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He has since been released under investigation while further enquiries are carried out."
