Don Goodman believes Middlesbrough’s squad is facing another overhaul this summer, though believes the fact that the majority of their loan players failing to impress last season leaves them
in a stronger position. Boro had five loan players last term but only Ben Doak and Mark Travers were able to make a positive impact for Michael Carrick’s side. Doak didn’t play a game
beyond January though, and his early season-ending injury had a major impact in what ended up being a hugely disappointing tenth-place finish. As Boro continue their review of the season and
their future direction of travel, plans are already been put in place to plan for what could be another busy summer transfer window. Though not expected to be their entire summer transfer
business, Boro have initially identified right-back, centre-back, central midfield, wide forward and a striker as their five biggest priorities. Offering his verdict on the work needed on
the squad though, Goodman told FruityKing: "The only time you face a problem with loan players is when they are a success and you have a team full of them. At Middlesbrough, the only
loan player in attack who impressed was Ben Doak. “Middlesbrough don't have that problem as Doak and Travers were the only success stories. I'm unsure on what the picture looks
like at Middlesbrough this summer in terms of FFP and how much they'll have available to spend. I do look at their squad and think it needs an overhaul." After the club-record sale
of Emmanuel Latte Lath in January plus some bonus money from Morgan Rogers and Djed Spence performance-related bonus payments over the course of the season, Boro are expected to be in a
decent position to invest in their squad this summer. They could have an even bigger transfer kitty too, with a large sell-on percentage attached to their Rogers deal with Aston Villa as he
attracts interest this summer. On top of that, Hayden Hackney and Rav van den Berg are both attracting interest and could be sold for big fees if they can’t be convinced to stay at the
Riverside. While re-signing Doak - who is now a target for Everton this summer - is completely out of the question for Boro, Goodman says the club should go all out to re-sign Travers from
Bournemouth. This despite the fact that Boro currently don’t anticipate he will return given the finances required for a position they don’t consider a priority as Sol Brynn returns from
injury. Boro will monitor the situation, but it appears unlikely as things stand. But Goodman insisted: "If I were in Middlesbrough's shoes, I'd absolutely go all-out for Mark
Travers this summer. He really improved their defensive efficiency but it was just a shame that his arrival coincided with the injury of Doak and the sale of Emmanuel Latte Lath, which
meant they went off the boil in attack. "While he was shoring them up, the forwards stopped scoring and that prevented them from getting over the line and forcing their way into the
play-offs. It's a no-brainer for me. If you've got the opportunity to sign Travers following such an impressive loan spell, you've got to go for it.”
