Everyone’s favourite supernatural show Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its super successful seven-season run more than 20 years ago, but fans will be excited to hear that the show is eyeing a
grand return to screens with a revival planned for the new chapter in the franchise. Sources told Deadline that a follow up series is reportedly nearing a pilot order from streaming giant
Hulu, and the original Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is expected to reprise her signature role. Self-professed Buffy fan and Oscar winner, Chloé Zhao, will be directing the pilot in
question, and the screenplay will be written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (of Poker Face fame). The reboot comes from 20th Television, the studio behind the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and Walt Disney Studio's Searchlight TV, where Chloé has a first-look deal. According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources have revealed that the Buffy reboot could potentially focus on a
younger Slayer, and that Sarah’s Buffy Summers may not be the titular character in the show. There are whispers of the reboot shortly starting a writers room for the revival after the pilot
order is fulfilled. This indicates that Hulu and the studios have monumental expectations from the project, and are extremely optimistic about it going to series. Though there isn’t any
official confirmation on whether the cast of the original show will return, it is highly likely that will be the case. The revival is being touted as the next chapter in the Buffyverse, and
has been executive produced by Sarah, Chloé, Nora and Lilla, along with the executive producers of the original series – Gail Berman of the Jackal Group and Fran Kuzui & Kaz Kuzui of
Suite B. Legendary singer-songwriter Dolly Parton is also expected to executive produce, with her company Sandollar being a producer on the original show. Joss Whedon, the original creator
of Buffy who also wrote the 1992 movie that the series was based on, allegedly has no involvement with the reboot. After facing a barrage of misconduct allegations in 2021, Joss has not
worked in Hollywood in any official capacity. If a series is ordered from the Hulu pilot, it will be the third in the vampire franchise which initially saw Buffy The Vampire Slayer air for
five seasons, from 1997 to 2001 on the WB, after which it moved to UPN for two more seasons, as well as the spinoff Angel, which aired on the WB for five seasons from 1999 through to 2004.
Dolly Parton has subtly indicated over a year ago that a return of the beloved supernatural show was in the works, revealing: “They’re still working on that (Buffy The Vampire Slayer
reboot). They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.” Sarah Michelle Gellar, who has been publicly opposed to revisiting the show that shot her to superstardom as recently as
2023, recently said in a December interview that she might finally be open to the idea. While promoting her current series, Original Sin (the prequel series to Dexter), Sarah said: “It’s
funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect, but watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter _,_ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get
your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’” When quizzed about whether a Buffy revival will necessarily be a prequel, Sarah said: “No, it could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you
realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.” Negotiations surrounding Sarah’s return to the show reportedly started when she made these comments in the
public forum, and are now in their final stages, according to sources. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s original Buffy earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Fans of the original show are waiting with
bated breath to hear more about the revival, with the internet dissolving into a much-expected meltdown at the news of a reboot. One X user expressed their excitement and said: “The
original Buffy is one of my top five shows of all time and my biggest objection to any previous reboot was that my only real interest was if Sarah Michelle Gellar reprised her role. She is
Buffy. Full stop. “Now that it's actually close to happening, I'm very excited.” A Redditor couldn’t contain their joy and shared: “Love it! Hopefully it gets a full season green
light!” While some die-hard fans expressed their concerns over a reboot and commented: “Buffy is my favourite show of all time and I’m super nervous for this. I do have faith in SMG (Sarah
Michelle Gellar) and I know she would never return if they didn’t do Buffy the character justice. “Reboots have ruined a lot for me (Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars). Not to mention that Angel
and Spike have aged and it will be jarring to see them. I hope it’s focused on Buffy and the scoobies mostly with Giles and Faith involved as well.” Another ‘X’ user expressed why they think
a reboot is not it: “I think the Buffy reboot is a bad idea but 20 years into the future is exactly when you should do a reboot.”
