Marc White believes Dorking Wanderers players might have got too comfortable – and he’s on a mission to change that. The Wanderers boss believes that ever since his club changed from the
typical non-league model of training Tuesday and Thursday nights, to training Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, the club have lost their way. The switch to three mornings a week was
meant to be a hybrid between being part-time and being full-time - and a stepping stone for the club’s eventual transition into the latter. However, White believes it has only brought poor
results so far. And he believes that could be down to too much time sitting around eating scrambled eggs and watching Sky Sports News. “We’ve never actually found our feet since we switched
to mornings,” the first team manager and chairman explained. “Our best season on club record was when we were training Tuesday and Thursday nights and then we finished, I think, 12 points
off the play-offs in the National League, being one of only two teams to beat Notts County. That was our best season. “Then the next season we switched to mornings and we’ve never quite
mastered it with that hybrid approach. “So this summer we’re just working hard at that, on top of making sure we’re got the right players in the building.” And with switching back to Tuesday
and Thursday evening not an option, with the hybrid approach seen as a stepping stone to one-day being a full-time club, White is keen to address the problem head-on. “We’ve already
challenged ourselves to be a lot more demanding with what we do,” he said. “I’m not sure we’ve used the time available as well as we could do in the past. “But I mean, you know what we’re
like? We have this ridiculous pursuit of success and if we fail, we take it personally. “This time last year we had five or six injuries and without those, that alone, we’re in a better
position. If we started the season tomorrow, we’d have every single player on the training field and some new signings to boot. So we already feel we are in a better position there and then
it’s just off the pitch and trying to get the best of that hybrid training programme. “I don’t know why it has been such a problem. “It should mean the players come in fresh rather than come
in on a Thursday evening having rushed there after a full day at work. “I can only think that maybe we have gotten a bit too comfortable. Have we lost that grit and that ‘in it together’
feeling? “You’ve only got to look at Horsham and look at the success they’ve had, and they’re in it together, aren’t they? “Do you lose that when you’re sitting around eating scrambled eggs
and staring at Sky Sports News for the 20th time? Do you lose that ‘us and them’? “So we need to be more demanding. I’ve done some research, spoken to some top non-league and Football League
managers, and seen what they say about pre-season and double sessions and that stuff. They create hard-to-beat sides. That’s what we need to get back to being.”
