A REVIEW OF INDICATORS OF AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL LIVELIHOOD SUSTAINABILITY. WORKING PAPER 1. CONTENTS * Abstract * Citation * Links ABSTRACT The overall goal of the project is to assist in
the development of more effective, equitable and sustainable participatory management of renewable natural resources in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of the research is to identify the
links between the sustainability of different farming systems and agricultural policy in South Africa and Uganda. This working paper attempts to provide a background guide to those involved
in the development of indicators of sustainable systems with a particular focus on natural resource management. It originated from the need to develop and measure indicators of successful
and failing farming systems as part of a research project funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). This project, entitled 'The effects of policy and
institutional environment on natural resource management and investment by farmers and rural households in east and southern Africa', is implemented by 5 research institutions in the
UK, Uganda and South Africa. In this context the paper is particularly concerned with issues and approaches related to the development of indicators of successful farming systems and rural
livelihood strategies. However, the discussion of these specific aspects of sustainability indicators is accompanied by a review of indicator frameworks which has a wider, and more general
relevance. CITATION A review of indicators of agricultural and rural livelihood sustainability. Working Paper 1, ISBN: 1 902518616, i + 29 pp. LINKS A review of indicators of agricultural
