The Daily Mail’s deadline day blog (Thursday, 7.53AM) claim that Aston Villa have made an enquiry to sign Wolves midfielder Leander Dendoncker with the Belgian in the final year of his deal
– after Everton saw an £8m bid rejected. Dendoncker, 27, has dropped out of the starting line-up at Wolves since Bruno Lage brought in club-record signing Mathues Nunes. Since the latter’s
arrival, he has made substitute outings against Tottenham and then Newcastle. On Wednesday night, he was an unused substitute against Bournemouth – a game in which Wolves drew 0-0. He is
said to be the subject of plenty of interest on deadline day, with Everton having a bid rejected earlier this week. Aston Villa are likely to lose Douglas Luiz before the 11pm deadline with
Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid also keen. Now, Steven Gerrard’s side have made an approach to sign Dendoncker, from their rivals Wolves. VILLA HAVE MADE ENQUIRY TO SIGN
WOLVES MIDFIELDER LEANDER DENDONCKER Dendoncker fills two, much-needed holes at Villa. Steven Gerrard needs a centre-back after losing Diego Carlos to a long-term ankle injury – but also a
replacement for Luiz. Dendoncker is capable of playing in both positions. Albeit in a back three at Wolves, he has shown he is more than capable of playing in defence during his four years
at Wolves. More recently, though, he has been more of a box-to-box midfielder at Wolves. Even, a bit of a goal threat. Last season, Dendoncker had a hand in seven goals. The Belgium
international is excellent in the air, in both boxes. Now, he could be on his way to Villa – if Everton do not decide to increase their initial offer. He is keen on leaving. Wolves might
also be against selling to one of their biggest rivals in Aston Villa. But his contractual situation will pose the biggest weight, and given he was an unused sub on Wednesday, the Midlands
club do need to sell Dendoncker.
